Program Notes on Menuet in G minor, BWV Anhang 115 -- Urtext by Petzold :

This famous Menuet BWV Anhang 115 was originally composed for the keyboard in the key of G minor.

It was traditionnally attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, as it appears in Anna Magdalena Bach's Notebook, a notebook which Bach offered to his wife Anna Magdalena in 1725 and which was to be filled with favorite selections of the members of the Bach family.

However, recent research has concluded that Menuet BWV Anhang 115 was probably composed by Christian Petzold, a German composer and organist contemporary with Bach.

During the Baroque period, musicians customarily played menuets in pairs : a first menuet, followed immediately by a second menuet, and then the first menuet played again without repeats.

This menuet can thus follow immediately Menuet in G Major, BWV Anhang 114 (also by Petzold), after which Menuet BWV Anhang 114 may be played again without repeats.

This score is an Urtext based on the original manuscripts available.

Please note that the cadential trill on the last beat of measure 31 is an editorial suggestion, as it does not appear in the sources.
