Program Notes on Menuet in G Major, BWV Anhang 114 -- Urtext by Petzold :

This famous Menuet BWV Anhang 114 was traditionnally attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, as it appears in Anna Magdalena Bach's Notebook, a notebook which Bach offered to his wife Anna Magdalena in 1725 and which was to be filled with favorite selections of the members of the Bach family.

However, recent research has concluded that Menuet BWV Anhang 114 was probably composed by Christian Petzold, a German composer and organist contemporary with Bach.

During the Baroque period, musicians customarily played menuets in pairs : a first menuet, followed immediately by a second menuet, and then the first menuet played again without repeats.

This menuet can thus be followed immediately by Menuet in G minor, BWV Anhang 115 (also by Petzold), after which it may be played again without repeats.

This score is an Urtext based on the original manuscripts available.

Please note that the quarter note rests in measures 25-26 are editorial, as they do not appear in the sources.

This score contains suggestions for realizing the ornaments in accordance with Baroque performance practice.
