This Allegro is the first movement of the Sonata in D Major, Hob. XVI:4 by Franz Joseph Haydn.

Haydn composed this sonata - also called Divertimento - for the harpsichord, although it can very well be played on the piano.

This sonata contains two movements :

Allegro in D Major (the source contains no tempo indication)
Menuet & Trio in D Major

Please note that this score contains suggestions for playing the ornaments (in this case, turns, trills and appoggiaturas) in accordance with the performance practice of the Classical period.

In particular, the keyboard player must remember that trills and appoggiaturas begin ON the beat, and that trills begin on the upper auxiliary note.

The turn in measure 1 and all other similar measures is often placed directly above the first note in other editions. However, we choose to follow Haydn's advice to this publisher regarding the use of the turn with a dotted note : When employed with a dotted note, the turn shall stand over the dot. Leave some space between the note and the dot in order to make this clear.
