Program Notes on Arietta, Op. 12, No. 1 by Grieg :

This charming Arietta in E flat Major, Op. 12, No. 1 is the very first of Edvard Grieg's Lyric Pieces.

It is based on one of Grieg's favorite melodies, which comes back in the very last of the 66 Lyric Pieces, Remembrances (Efterklang), but this time in a waltz form.

Please note that this score contains suggestions for performing the ornaments (in this case, appogiaturas) in accordance with Grieg's own performance practice.
