This beautiful Study Op. 45, No. 14 is an excellent way of practicing string crossings and bow division.
The violinist should play the quarter note with a whole bow, and then play the eighth notes at the tip or at the frog of the bow.
When playing at the tip, the fourth finger can be lifted from the bow.
When playing at the frog, the index finger can be lifted from the bow.
