Program Notes on Concerto RV 297 - L'inverno (2/3 : Largo) by Vivaldi :

This famous Largo is the second of three movements in the Concerto RV 297, Op. 8, No. 4 (L'inverno) by Antonio Vivaldi.

This concerto is part of Vivaldi's famous Four Seasons [Le quattro stagioni], a series of four concertos part of Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione [The Contest of Harmony and Invention].

These 12 concerti were published in Amsterdam by Le Cène in 1725.

Each concerto in the Four Seasons is associated to a sonnet probably written by Vivaldi.

The verses corresponding to the Largo of the Winter concerto are as follows :

Passar al fuoco i di quieti e contenti, Mentre la pioggia fuor bagna ben cento [To spend calm, contented days by the fireside while hundreds are soaked by the rain outside]

This Largo was originally composed for the violin in the key of E flat Major.

This score is a transcription for trumpet in B flat and piano.

It is set in the key of A flat Major.

The trumpet part is appropriate for Grade 6 trumpet players.

Allegro non molto
Aggiacciato tremar trà nevi algenti
Al Severo Spirar d' orrido Vento,
Correr battendo i piedi ogni momento;
E pel Soverchio gel batter i denti;

Passar al foco i di quieti e contenti
Mentre la pioggia fuor bagna ben cento

Caminar Sopra il giaccio, e à passo lento
Per timor di cader gersene intenti;
Gir forte Sdruzziolar, cader à terra
Di nuove ir Sopra 'l giaccio e correr forte
Sin ch' il giaccio si rompe, e si disserra;
Sentir uscir dalle ferrate porte
Sirocco Borea, e tutti i Venti in guerra
Quest' é 'l verno, mà tal, che gioia apporte.

Allegro non molto
To tremble from cold in the icy snow,
In the harsh breath of a horrid wind;
To run, stamping one's feet every moment,
Our teeth chattering in the extreme cold

Before the fire to pass peaceful,
Contented days while the rain outside pours down.

We tread the icy path slowly and cautiously, for fear of tripping and falling.
Then turn abruptly, slip, crash on the ground and, rising, hasten on across the ice lest it cracks up.
We feel the chill north winds course through the home despite the locked and bolted doors...
this is winter, which nonetheless brings its own delights.
