Program Notes on Concerto RV 293, Op. 8, No. 3 L'Autunno (III : Allegro) -- Urtext by Vivaldi :

This lively Allegro is the third of three movements in the Concerto RV 293, Op. 8, No. 3 (L'Autunno) by Antonio Vivaldi.

This concerto is part of Vivaldi's famous Four Seasons [Le quattro stagioni], a series of four concertos part of Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione [The Contest of Harmony and Invention].

Each concerto in the Four Seasons is associated to a sonnet probably written by Vivaldi himself.

The verses corresponding to the final Allegro of the Autumn concerto are as follows :

I cacciator alla nov' alba à caccia
Con corni, Schioppi, e canni escono fuore
Fugge la belua, e Seguono la traccia;
Già Sbigottita, e lassa al gran rumore
De' Schioppi e canni, ferita minaccia
Languida di fuggir, mà oppressa muore.

[The hunters emerge at the new dawn,
And with horns and dogs and guns depart upon their hunting
The beast flees and they follow its trail;
Terrified and tired of the great noise
Of guns and dogs, the beast, wounded, threatens
Languidly to flee, but harried, dies.]

Please note the following points about this Urtext edition :
  • Measure 39 (violin part) : in the Manchester manuscript, measure 39 is identical to measure 40
  • Measure 59 : the violin part is originally notated as sixteenth note triplets
  • Measure 60 : the segue indication in the violin part is editorial
  • Measures 76-77 : the notes in the violin part are slurred by 3 in the Amsterdam print
  • Measure 86 : the B flat in the violin part is editorial
  • Measures 129, 131, 133 and 135 : the slurs in the violin part are from the Amsterdam print

L'Autunno

Allegro
Celebra il Vilanel con balli e Canti
Del felice raccolto il bel piacere
E del liquor de Bacco accesi tanti
Finiscono col Sonno il lor godere

Adagio molto
Fà ch' ogn' uno tralasci e balli e canti
L' aria che temperata dà piacere,
E la Staggion ch' invita tanti e tanti
D' un dolcissimo Sonno al bel godere.

Allegro
I cacciator alla nov' alba à caccia
Con corni, Schioppi, e canni escono fuore
Fugge la belua, e Seguono la traccia;
Già Sbigottita, e lassa al gran rumore
De' Schioppi e canni, ferita minaccia
Languida di fuggir, mà oppressa muore.

Autumn

Allegro
Celebrates the peasant, with songs and dances,
The pleasure of a bountiful harvest.
And fired up by Bacchus' liquor, many end their revelry in sleep.

Adagio molto
Everyone is made to forget their cares and to sing and dance
By the air which is tempered with pleasure
And by the season that invites so many, many
Out of their sweetest slumber to fine enjoyment.

Allegro
The hunters emerge at the new dawn,
And with horns and dogs and guns depart upon their hunting
The beast flees and they follow its trail;
Terrified and tired of the great noise
Of guns and dogs, the beast, wounded, threatens
Languidly to flee, but harried, dies.
