Details about Telemann : Orchestral Suites, TWV 55 |  Associated sheet music

These Orchestral Suites, TWV 55 were composed by Georg Philipp Telemann during the Baroque period.

The orchestral suite is a musical form which Telemann particularly appreciated.

In an autobriographical article written in 1740, Telemann estimated that he had already composed six hundred suites.

Of these, only about a quarter have survived, mostly in manuscript.

The orchestral suite consists in a Ouverture followed by a succession of dance movements.

As a musical form, the orchestral suite originated in France with Jean-Baptiste Lully.

However, the orchestral suite as a musical form was used mainly by German composers.

A contemporary German critic, Johann Adolph Scheibe, declared in 1745 that the enormous popularity of the orchestral suite in Germany could be attributed mainly to Telemann.

He further said that Telemann, having begun by imitating the French style, had soon become more expert in it than the French themselves.
