Stainer, Sir John

Sir John Stainer was en English composer, organist and musicologist of the 19th century.
He composed mainly cathedral music and hymn tunes.
Nowadays, Sir John Stainer is venerated mostly not as a composer, but as a pioneer of English musicology.
His edition of Early Bodleian Music explores music before Palestrina and Tallis.
Also of great value is his edition, together with the Reverend H.R. Bramley, of Christmas carols : Christmas Carols, New and Old (London, 1871).
