Soussmann, Heinrich

Soussmann, Heinrich

Heinrich Soussmann (1796-1848) was a German flutist, violinist and composer of the Romantic period.

Soussman was a child prodigy on the violin, but he quickly changed for the flute.

At the age of 16, he joined a German infantry regiment band and took part in the campaign against Napoleon in 1813-1814.

He was wounded in the chest and had to quit flute playing.

He returned to Berlin and made a living as a violinist in the Thiergarten.

After recovering from his wound, he became flautist at the Chapel Royal in Berlin in 1816.

In 1836, he settled in St. Petersburg and was appointed first flute at the Imperial Theatre, becoming Musical Director a few years later.

Soussmann composed much music for the flute including a Grosse Praktische Flötenschule, Op.53 (1839).

Glinka is reported to have said that Soussman was undoubtedly one of the best, if not the best player in Europe.
