Details about Schubert : German Dances D 972 |  Associated sheet music

These Three German Dances, D 972 by Franz Schubert were published posthumously in 1889.

These three German dances are :
  1. German Dance in D flat Major, D 972.1
  2. German Dance in A flat Major, D 972.2
  3. German Dance in A Major, D 972.3
The Deutscher Tanz [German dance] was quite popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, mainly in Austria and Germany.

The German dance is a rapid dance for couples, in triple meter.

It is not to be confused with the earlier Allemande (also known as Teutscher Tanz), which was a much slower dance movement.

Composers such as Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert wrote German dances for keyboard or for other instruments, including for orchestra.

The term German dance was eventually replaced by the term waltz.
