Program Notes on Le Cygne by Saint-Saëns :

This magnificent cantilene Le Cygne [The Swan] by Camille Saint-Saëns is the 13th and penultimate movement of the Carnaval des animaux.

The Swan was originally composed for cello and two pianos.

It was first performed in public on March 9, 1886, but was not published until 1922, after the composer's death.

This sheet music of Le Cygne is score for violoncello with piano accompaniment (one piano).

It is appropriate for Grade 8 cello players.

The Swan is written in G Major, with a 6/4 time signature.

The lyrical cello melody is accompanied by broken chords in the piano.

Le Cygne is the only movement from the Carnaval des Animaux that Saint-Saëns allowed to be played in public during his lifetime.

He thought the remaining movements were too frivolous and would damage his reputation as a serious composer.
