Reger, Max

Reger, Max

1873-1916

Max Reger (1873-1916) was a German composer, conductor, pianist, organist and teacher of the Romantic period.

His musical style combines his personal chromatic harmonic language with Baroque and Classical structures.

Max Reger considered himself as being part of the tradition of Beethoven and Brahms.

Hence his works often combine the classical structures of these composers with the more complex harmonies of Liszt and Wagner.

Reger was also influenced by the complex counterpoint of Bach, mainly in his organ music.

He is considered to be both a successor to late 19th century Romanticism and a forerunner of early 20th century modernism.
