The Six Viennese Sonatinas were originally composed for wind trio with the title Five Divertimenti for Two Clarinets and Bassoon.

They were composed around the year 1783 and are thus mature works.

It is not known who first transcribed these works for the piano and gave them the title Viennese Sonatinas, but the first piano transcriptions were published by Artaria in Vienna in the early 1800s.

The Six Viennese Sonatinas are quite easier than the 19 keyboard sonatas.

They have a strong pedagogical value as they are very representative of Mozart's classical style.
