Mollenhauer, Eduard

Mollenhauer, Eduard

Eduard Mollenhauer (1827-1914) was an American violinist and composer of the 19th century.

Mollenhauer was born in Prussia.

He studied the violin with Ernst and Spohr and was famous in Germany and in Saint Petersburg before the age of 25.

Mollenhauer then went to England in order to escape conscription. There he joined Jullien, whom he accompanied to New York City in 1853.

He settled there and became a founder in America of the Conservatory method of teaching the violin.

Mollenhauer's best-known compositions for the violin are his quartets.

His two Fantasias for violin and piano are still widely used nowadays for young violin students.

Mollenhauer also composed three operas : The Corsican Bride (1861), Breakers (1881), and The Masked Ball.
