Mason, Lowell

Lowell Mason was an American music educator, church musician, composer and anthologist of the 19th century.

As a church musician, Lowell Mason composed and arranged hundreds of hymn tunes, many of which are still sung today.

Mason was thus a leading figure in American church music, and a fervent advocate of congregational participation in church music.

As a music educator, Lowell Mason contributed to introducing music into American public schools.

Lowell Mason is often called the father of American church music.
