Köhler, Ernesto

Ernesto Köhler (or Koehler) was a flautist and composer of the Romantic period.
He was first taught the flute by his father, Venceslau Joseph Köhler, who was the first flute in the Duke of Modena's orchestra.
He moved to Vienna in 1869 and on to Saint Petersburg in 1871, where he spent the remaining of his life.
Ernesto Köhler was a member of the orchestra of the Imperial Opera in Saint Petersburg.
He was also a soloist, composer and flute teacher.
He composed over 100 works for the flute : études, duets, and solos, as well as an opera and several ballets.
Ernesto Köhler is mainly remembered for his Progress in Flute Playing, Op. 33, published in the 1880s.
