Program Notes on Nearer My God To Thee by Mason :

Nearer, my God, to Thee is a famous 19th century Christian hymn.

The first five verses were written in 1841 by British actress and poet Sarah Flower Adams (1805-1848).

The sixth verse was written by Edward H. Bickersteth, Jr.

This hymn is based on the scripture Genesis 28:11-12.

The music is the tune Bethany, which was composed in 1856 by American composer Lowell Mason (1792-1872).

The hymn has become associated with the RMS Titanic, as passengers reported that the string ensemble played it in the final minutes before the vessel sank.
