Program Notes on Amazing Grace by (Anonymous) :

This score presents the hymn Amazing Grace in a four-voice arrangement for Choir SATB.

This sheet music contains the complete lyrics in English (7 verses).

The song Amazing Grace is a beautiful and peaceful Christian hymn about wonder and gratefulness.

The melody is pentatonic and suggests a bagpipe tune.

The lyrics were written in 1772 by John Newton, a former slave trader who had converted to Christianity.

The hymn is about divine grace; it is based on 1 Chronicles 17:16-17, a prayer of King David in which he marvels at God's choosing him and his house.

It is believed that Newton wrote this hymn for his 1773 New Year's Day sermon; he then entitled the piece Faith's Review and Expectations.

This hymn conveys a powerful message and bears strong references to human rights and freedom.

Words : Verses 1-6 : John Newton (1725-1807), Olney Hymns. London: W. Oliver, 1779, Book I, no. 41.

Verse 7 : Attributed to John P. Rees (1828-1900), but probably from an earlier unknown author.

Melody : Traditional, New Britain, in The Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion, compiled by William Walker, 1835.

Arrangement for four voices by Edwin Othello Excell (1851-1921), 1909.

Amazing Grace

1. Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound)
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

2. ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believed!

3. Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

4. The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

5. Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

6. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.

7. When we've been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we'd first begun.
