This Moderato is the first movement of the Sonata Hob. XVI:10, Landon 6 in C Major by Franz Joseph Haydn.

Please note that this score contains suggestions for playing the ornaments (in this case, trills, appoggiaturas and turns) in accordance with the performance practice of the Classical period.

In particular, the keyboard player must remember that all ornaments begin ON the beat, and that trills begin on the upper auxiliary note.

In trills, more or less repercussions may be played depending on the player's taste and ability.

The appoggiaturas in measures 4, 25 and 42 are subject to the following rule by Joachim Quantz : When a rest follows a note, the appoggiatura receives the value of the note, and the note the value of the rest.

Haydn uses the sonata form in this first movement.

The exposition features theme 1 in the tonic key of C Major (m. 1), theme 2 in the dominant key (G Major, m. 9) and a short codetta in the dominant key (m. 16).

The development follows, from m. 22 to m. 38.

Finally, we have the recapitulation starting with theme 1 in the tonic key (m. 39), followed by theme 2 also in the tonic key (m. 47) and the codetta in the tonic key (m. 54).
