Handel's Judas Maccabaeus is an oratorio in three acts.

It was composed between July 8/9 and August 11, 1746.

This oratorio is set in the political context of the Jacobite Rising of 1745, and was written in honor of the victory of Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, at the Battle of Culloden.

The oratorio Judas Maccabaeus tells the story of the victory of Jewish warrior and hero Judas Maccabaeus over the invading enemies of the Israelites.

Judas Maccabaeus was first performed at Covent Garden on April 1, 1747, and has become one of Handel's most popular oratorios, together with the Messiah.
