Sources : Greensleeves is a traditional English folk song.

It was a favorite in England in the days of Queen Elizabeth I, and Shakespeare mentions it in his play The Merry Wives of Windsor (ca 1602).

Legend has it that Greensleeves may have been composed by King Henry VIII (1491-1547) for his lover and future queen consort Anne Boleyn. Anne, the youngest daughter of Thomas Boleyn, rejected Henry's advances, as told by the song : Alas, my love, you do me wrong to cast me off discourteously... However, it is unlikely that King Henry VIII composed Greensleeves, as the song is written in a style which was not known in England until after Henry VIII died.

Program Notes : This score is an arrangement of Greensleeves for soprano voice and piano in the key of F minor.

For your greater enjoyment, it includes the lyrics in English (five verses and chorus).

Greensleeves

Alas, my love, you do me wrong
To cast me off discourteously.
And I have loved you so long
Delighting in your company.

Chorus
Greensleeves was all my joy,
Greensleeves was my delight.
Greensleeves, my heart of gold,
And who but my Lady Greensleeves.

I have been ready at your hand
To grant whatever you would crave.
I have both waged life and land,
Your love and good will for to have.

Greensleeves etc.

Your vows you've broken, like my heart,
Oh, why did you so enrapture me?
Now I remain in a world apart,
But my heart remains in captivity.

Greensleeves etc.

Well, I will pray to God on high
That thou my constancy mayest see,
And that yet once before I die
Thou wilt vouch safe to love me.

Greensleeves etc.

Ah, Greensleeves, now farewell, adieu,
To God I pray to prosper thee,
For I am still thy lover true,
Come once again and love me.

Greensleeves etc.
