Gedike, Alexander

Alexander Fyodorovich Gedike (1877-1957) (also spelled Goedicke) was a Russian composer and pianist of the early 20th century.

Gedike studied the piano at the Moscow Conservatory with Galli, Pabst and Safonov.

Despite his lack of formal training in composition, Gedike won, in 1900, at the age of 23, the Anton Rubinstein Prize for Composition.

Gedike appeared in Russia and abroad as a concert pianist.

In 1909, Gedike was appointed professor of piano at the Moscow Conservatory.

Gedike's music is remarquable for its use of polyphony.

Gedike is remembered as the guardian of strict classical traditions in Russian music.
