Gardel, Carlos

Gardel, Carlos

Carlos Gardel (1890-1935) was a singer, songwriter, composer and actor of the early 20th century.

Gardel is one of the main figures in the history of tango, a musical form and dance which evolved in Argentina at the end of the 19th century.

Gardel was endowed with a baritone voice of unerring musicality and dramatic phrasing.

Gardel's chief contribution was to popularize the sung tango.

Many of the hundreds of three-minute tangos which he recorded during his lifetime are miniature masterpieces of the genre.

Together with lyricist and long-time collaborator Alfredo Le Pera, Gardel wrote several classic tangos, notably Mi Buenos Aires querido, Amores de Estudiante, Soledad, Volver, Por una cabeza and El día que me quieras.

Carlos Gardel was killed in an aeroplane crash while at the height of his career.
