Franck, César

Franck, César

César Franck (1822-1890) was a French composer, pianist, organist and music teacher of the Romantic period.

He was one of the main figures of the French musical life during the second half of the 19th century.

From 1858 until the end of his life, César Franck was organist at the Basilique Sainte-Clotilde in Paris.

in 1872, César Franck became professor at the Conservatoire de Paris.

In many of his compositions, César Franck makes use of the cyclic form.

This compositional method aspires to achieve unity across the multiple movements of a work by reusing earlier thematic material in later movements.

Furthermore, all the main themes of the work are generated from a single germinal motif.

Hence, the main melodic subjects are interrelated, thus becoming an effective unifying device.
