Details about Fauré : Dolly, Op. 56 |  Associated sheet music

The suite Dolly, Op. 56, is a set of six pieces for piano 4 hands composed by Gabriel Fauré between 1894 and 1897.

The suite Dolly is Fauré's only work for piano 4 hands.

It was first performed in 1898 by Alfred Cortot and Edouard Risler.

The suite Dolly, Op. 56 bears the dedication À Mademoiselle Hélène Bardac.

These six short pieces were thus composed for Hélène Bardac, nicknamed Dolly, daughter of Emma Bardac, opera singer and future wife of Claude Debussy.

The Berceuse was composed for Dolly's first birthday, while the other pieces were composed for Dolly's later birthdays of other family events.

The individual titles of the pieces show the intimate character of the suite, Ketty being the Bardac's dog, which later became Kitty in the fourth piece, and Mi-a-ou being derived from Monsieur Aoul, which was Hélène's nickname for her brother Raoul.

The suite Dolly, Op. 56 contains six pieces, lasting a little less than 15 minutes in total :
  1. Berceuse

  2. Mi-a-ou

  3. Le jardin de Dolly

  4. Kitty-valse

  5. Tendresse

  6. Le pas espagnol
