This Study Opus 84, No. 19 by Charles Dancla is mainly concerned with shifting in the first three positions and is preceded with an exercise in démanché to be played on the lower string.

In a short but important foreword, Dancla explains the correct technique for change of positions :

In order for the left hand to shift easily from one position to the other, the hand and fingers must move forward and backwards in a single unique movement. When moving the fingers forward, pupils often tend to move the hand backwards, which is an incorrect movement.
