This short piece La Bourbonnoise by François Couperin is a work from the French Baroque period.

It has the following A-A-B-B musical form :

  • Measures 1-8 : Phrase A beginning in the main key of G Major and modulating to the dominant key of D Major in measure 7
  • Measures 9-16 : Phrase B entirely in the main key of G Major
Please take note that unlike other composers of the Baroque period, François Couperin insisted that no ornamentation of any kind be added to his music other than the ornaments he himself indicated.

Program Notes : Couperin composed this gavotte La Bourbonnoise for the harpsichord, but it can also very well be played on the piano.

Remember however that the ornamentation indicated by Couperin must be strictly observed.

In order to assist the player, the editor has added to this score suggestions for the realization of the ornaments in accordance with French Baroque performance practice.

These ornaments are :

  • Trills (as in measures 0 and 2) : trills begin on the upper auxiliary note and are played ON the beat

  • Mordents (as in measure 7, left hand) : mordents begin on the main note, ON the beat, and should be played as rapidly as possible with a biting character

  • Appoggiaturas (as in measure 4) : appoggiaturas are played ON the beat and take up one half of the main note's value
