Program Notes on O Come, Little Children by Schulz :

The hymn O Come, Little Children [Ihr Kinderlein, kommet] is a German Christmas carol.

The lyrics were written by German Roman Catholic priest and schoolmaster Christoph von Schmid (1768-1854) in 1798.

His poem Die Kinder bei der Krippe [The children at the manger] was first published in 1811 and originally had eight verses.

Schmid included this poem in his 1818 collection Blüten dem blühenden Alter gewidmet [Flowers dedicated to the flowering age].

Together with other poems from this collection, it was then set to music by Franz Xaver Luft in 1837.

The music to the poem as it is known today was written by Johann Abraham Peter Schulz in 1790.

It was then a secular song entitled Wie reizend, wie wonnig [How charming, how pleasant].

Sometime around 1832, this melody was first published with Schmid's poem in the collection Sechzig deutsche Lieder für dreißig Pfennig [Sixty German songs for thirty pennies] by Friedrich Heinrich Eickhoff (1807–1886).

The translation from German to English used in our version was performed by Melanie Schulte (1885-1922).

This Christmas carol is intended for children, reminding them that the true meaning of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of the Christ Child.

This score is an arrangement of the Christmas carol O Come, Little Children for easy high voice and piano.

It is set in the key of E Major.

The vocal range is E4-E5 for female singers and E3-E4 for male singers.

For your greater enjoyment, this sheet music includes the complete lyrics in English (3 verses).

O Come, Little Children

1. O come, little children, O come, one and all,
To Bethlehem's stable, in Bethlehem's stall
And see with rejoicing this glorious sight,
Our Father in heaven has sent us this night.

2. O see in the manger, in hallowed light
A star throws its beam on this holiest sight.
In clean swaddling clothes lies the heavenly Child,
More lovely than angels, this Baby so mild.

3. O there lies the Christ Child, on hay and on straw;
The shepherds are kneeling before Him with awe
And Mary and Joseph smile on Him with love,
While angels are singing sweet songs from above.

O Come, Little Children (alternate translation)

1. O Come, little children, O come, one and all
To Bethlehem haste, to the manger so small.
God's Son for a gift has been sent you this night
To be your redeemer, your joy and delight.

2. The hay is His pillow, the manger His bed
The beasts stand in wonder to gaze on His head
Yet there where He lieth, so weak and so poor
Come shepherds and wise men to kneel at His door.

3. He's born in a stable for you and for me
Draw near by the bright gleaming starlight to see
In swaddling clothes lying so meek and so mild,
And purer than angels the heavenly Child.

4. See Mary and Joseph with love beaming eyes
Are gazing upon the rude bed where He lies,
The shepherds are kneeling, with hearts full of love,
While angels sing loud hallelujahs above.

5. Kneel down and adore Him with shepherds today,
Lift up little hands now and praise Him as they;
Rejoice that a Savior from sin you can boast
And join in the song of the heavenly Host.

6. Now Glory to God! sing the angels on high
And Peace upon Earth! heavenly voices reply.
Then come, little children, and join in the day
That gladdened the world on that first Christmas Day.
