Three Kings of Orient
Lyrics and music by John Henry Hopkins, Jr. (1820-1891).
Although associated with Christmas, this song is rather an
Epiphany carol.
It was composed in 1857
for a Christmas pageant at the General Theological Seminary
in New York City.
It was first published in Rev. Hopkins' Carols, Hymns
and Songs in New York in 1863.

The Three Kings :
We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts, we traverse afar.
Field and fountain, moor and mountain,
Following yonder star.
Chorus
O Star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to Thy perfect light.
Melchior :
Born a King on Bethlehem's plain,
Gold I bring to crown Him again,
King forever, ceasing never,
Over us all to reign.
O Star of wonder, etc.
Caspar :
Frankincense to offer have I,
Incense owns a Deity nigh.
Prayer and praising, all men raising,
Worship Him, God most High.
O Star of wonder, etc.
Balthazar :
Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume
Breathes a life of gathering gloom;
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying,
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb.
O Star of wonder, etc.
The Three Kings :
Glorious now behold Him arise,
King and God and sacrifice.
Alleluia, Alleluia;
Earth to the heavens replies.
O Star of wonder, etc.
