Melody : Ancien air de chasse, in Grosjean, R. Airs des Noëls lorrains (1862).
Lyrics : Legeay, Dom G., Noëls anciens (1875-1876).
The melody for this Christmas carol was known in Normandy (France) in the 18th century (at the time of Louis XV) as a hunting horn tune entitled Tête bizarde.
Il est né, le divin Enfant has such a lively and catchy tune that it has been translated into many languages over the years. English translations include : Born is He, little Child divine, Born is Jesus, the infant King and Born on earth the divine Christ Child.
