God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen is a famous English Christmas carol.
An alternate title is God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen.
Both the lyrics and the music date from the 18th century and are by unknown author and composer.
Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol (1843) refers to this song :
...at the first sound of God bless you merry, gentlemen! May nothing you dismay!, Scrooge seized the ruler with such energy of action, that the singer fled in terror,
leaving the keyhole to the fog and even more congenial frost.
