Lyrics edited by : Rev. Henry Ramsden Bramley (1833-1917).

Music edited by : Sir John Stainer (1840-1901).

Complete title : Christmas Carols New and Old; The Words edited by the Rev. Henry Ramsden Bramley, M.A., Fellow and Tutor of Saint Mary Magdalen College, Oxford. The Music edited by Sir John Stainer, M.A., Mus.Doc., of the same College.

With the publication of Christmas Carols New and Old, Bramley and Stainer greatly contributed to the revival of the Christmas carol in the nineteenth century.

A first series of 20 carols was published in the 1860's. A second series of 22 carols followed in 1871. Finally, the third series of 28 carols was issued in 1878.

These books had a tremendous influence both on the clergy and on the general public, as they provided keyboard arrangements, complete lyrics and tasteful illustrations of traditional carols in the English language.
