Bonis, Mel.


Mélanie Hélène Bonis (1858-1937), better known under the pseudonym Mel. Bonis, was a French composer of the late Romantic period and beginning of the 20th century.

Mel. Bonis began piano lessons at an early age.

She was admitted to the Conservatoire de Paris in 1877.

There she studied harmony with Ernest Guiraud and the organ with César Franck.

Mel. Bonis married Albert Domange in 1883, and devoted the next ten years to raising her children.

She began composing regularly in about 1894.

She left more than 300 compositions, including chamber pieces, works for piano, choral pieces, organ music, songs and orchestral works.

Mel. Bonis' compositions were warmly praised by Camille Saint-Saëns.
