Program Notes on O Perfect Love by Barnby :

The poem O Perfect Love, All Human Thought Transcending was written by Dorothy Frances Gurney (1858-1932) in 1883.

It is a hymn for Holy Matrimony, written by Gurney for her sister's marriage in 1883.

At that moment, it was intended to be sung to Strength and Stay, in Hymns Ancient & Modern, No. 12.

In 1889, Gurney's hymn O Perfect Love, All Human Thought Transcending was set to an anthem by Sir Joseph Barnby for the marriage of the Duke of Fife with the Princess Louise of Wales, on July 27, 1889.

O Perfect Love

O perfect Love, all human thought transcending,
Lowly we kneel in prayer before Thy throne;
That theirs may be the love which knows no ending,
Whom Thou forevermore dost join in one.

O perfect Life, be Thou their full assurance,
Of tender charity and steadfast faith,
Of patient hope and quiet, brave endurance,
With childlike trust that fears not pain nor death.

Grant them the joy which brightens earthly sorrow;
Grant them the peace which calms all earthly strife;
And to life’s day the glorious unknown morrow
That dawns upon eternal love and life.
