Bariolage

General remarks on Bariolage |  Sheet music for practicing Bariolage

General remarks on Bariolage

Bariolage is a musical technique that applies to bowed instruments.

It consists in a rapid alternation between a static note and changing notes, the latter forming a melody either above or below the static note.

Bariolage is commonly used in Baroque violin music, where the static note is usually an open string. Bariolage produces a beautiful effect of maximum resonance on the instrument.
