Johann Sebastian Bach, Das wohltemperirte Clavier [Well-Tempered Clavier] (1722 for Book 1 and 1744 for Book 2).
The Well-Tempered Clavier is a collection of 48 preludes and fugues, in all 24 major and minor keys, and is considered to be one of the most influential works in the history of Western Classical music, as it contributed to firmly establishing the modern system of tempered tuning for keyboard instruments.
Prelude BWV 846 appears also in the Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach [Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach] (1725). This notebook was filled with favorite selections of the members of the Bach family.
This prelude in C Major is the first prelude in Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. It consists of a simple progression of arpeggiated chords. It is one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous compositions for the keyboard. It served as the inspiration for Gounod's Ave Maria.
